Sunflowers & Sweetcorn

I had envisioned a row of sunflowers blooming along the fence for our wedding weekend, but a month before the big day, many had already opened. In the end, a few were around for the weekend and what I had imagined as a focal point became a subtle, quiet addition to the backdrop. It was a gentle reminder that no matter how closely we watch or how much we wish, nature moves at its own rhythm—unfolding on its own schedule, not ours.

And then there was the corn. 🌽

I planted it mostly out of curiosity, but by the time the wedding came around, it had become a conversation piece. I loved the structure it added, and guests noticed it, often remarking, “that corn!” In the midst of all the celebration, it was lovely to see people appreciating something so simple.

A few days after the wedding, we picked some cobs, peeling back the husks to discover they were actually edible! I was content with the corn being purely ornamental but it ended up being something we could also enjoy together during our week away after the celebration.

We’ve been away from the garden for about 10 days. Fortunately, thanks to some helpful visitors who watered it in our absence, the garden has survived, despite the hot, dry weather. Now, the last of the sunflowers are putting on a stunning display! It’s amazing to think that all these flowers came from just two tiny seeds planted a few months back.
